I dont think the changes amount tona ditching of “quality” standards so much as a big shift in how journalism defines itself. The emphasis on “quality,”’whatever that means, overlooks the fact that the arrival of “objective” coverage was relatively recent. I worked at five news organizations over my career and the only one that was actually objective by command was UPI, and that was mainly so it would not offend its very conservative clients. The other point is that the system collapsed quite dramatically in the early 2000s and even the times is struggling to find a model that works.
